Mr. Haas from Brooklyn NY is requesting materials related to food, clothing & hygiene through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need assorted personal care items like body washes, lotions, foot sprays and chap sticks because they do not have the financial freedom to purchase these items!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Coming from some of the toughest and lower socioeconomic neighborhoods in NYC, our students do not often have the financial freedom when it comes to making purchases whether they are essential or not. A good percentage of our student population reside in live-in shelters, foster homes or numerous family members’ homes and do not have regular access to purchasing personal care items that raise their emotional and social psyche. Rather than letting a key portion of our student population be worried about coming to school because they do not have access to personal care products, Lillian's Locker exists to provide these item to the students to improve their outlook on school, while raising their self-image. By providing these materials to our students, it can change their outlook on not only school, but also everyday life. No student should be ashamed of attending school due to lack of personal care products, or not having soap for this mornings shower, it is our job as educators to remove this barrier! Together, with Lillian's Locker, we can improve my students’ lives!
Many of our students live in shelters and foster homes and do not have regular access to basic needs like personal care items. This project would provide a safe space for students to find the basic necessities they need for survival in their difficult environment. Our students should have these highly requested basic products including shampoos, deodorants, and body washes, and with your help, inner-city adolescents will stay clean and increase their self-image. The items would be kept in a discrete location and students can come to Lillian's Locker on a case-by-case basis to obtain what they need for themselves to raise their personal health as well as their social and emotional health. Every single item within this project will be used to fit the need and/or request of a student within our school. The assorted personal care items will be distributed to students who need them, and will work every day towards improving their personal hygiene was well as their social and emotional psyche. Rather than letting our students be ashamed because they do not have the means to get something, we want to provide them with access to the materials they otherwise would not have. One of the most heartbreaking things to see is a student who doesn't understand, picking on a student because they do not have access to self-care products. It is our job as educators to remove this from our educational atmosphere and promote a learning environment for all
