As a special education teacher, I get to work with a wide variety of individuals. My students come from all types of backgrounds and with many different exceptionalities, from autism, to learning disabilities, to brain disorders, and more. It is a dynamic group and each person in the classroom has something to offer every other person.
Teaching these students from 6th-8th grade allows me to watch them grow and gives me the great privilege of being a part of their development as learners and as citizens.
My Project
My project looks like a hodgepodge of goodies, and it is! I teach math and social studies sixth through eighth grades as well as sixth grade science. We are fortunate to have support in our classroom, but there are a few things we find ourselves without.
We need some additional tools to make learning fun and interactive!
For social studies, we work on propaganda in both seventh and eighth grades from different perspectives and we would like some coloring materials for the students to work on. Some of them struggle with fine motor skills and this helps them as well.
For science, we are asking for a plant growing kit to coincide with our life science unit on plants and fungi as well as a poster for our science center wall to use as a reference.
For math, our eighth grade students are working on graphing and pre-algebra skills and it is difficult and time consuming to draw grids on whiteboards. These boards and markers would allow them to focus on the work itself. And for our lower level learners, the dry erase math books will let us work on fluency skills without killing tons of trees in the process!
