My students need: 3 I-Pads, 3 Jumbo Magnetic Ten Frames and Magnetic Uppercase/Lowercase letters in order to support ELLs needs and to make learning more meaningful.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I’m a proud bilingual kindergarten teacher of 25 students with no teacher assistant. I spend Saturdays reading, researching, writing my lesson plans for the week and creating materials to use in class. Our school is a Title 1 school. My students come from a non-English speakers and low-income family.
My students have limited access to technology and English exposition at home.
Many of my students are just learning English, which placed them in disadvantage in contrast with well-funded schools. Therefore, my goal is to provide my students the necessary tools to help them continue develop their academic goals. I have students with IEP (Individualized Educational Plan) which still don’t know the alphabet, others struggle recognizing it. Some are reading at a level A and others are emergent readers.
At the beginning of the day we meet in the meeting area to do morning routine. After that we do readers workshop, writers and math workshop in which I model the strategy that I want them to learn and put it in practice during independent practice. While they do independent work I confer with a small group. Every other day I teach ESL science and ESL social studies. At the end of the day I use the I-Pad to review sight words, the words and letters of the week.
My Project
Through out this project my students will have plentiful opportunities to review activities, rehearse speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. They will enjoy the learning process and improve their skills. Unfortunately we only have two computers and an ipad in our classroom, which are not enough for the students to use them on a regular basis. Ipads will facilitate letter recognition, phonemic awareness and math skills. In addition it will incorporate visual and auditory experience for reading comprehension to improve reading skills. Also they will rehearse mathematical concept such as counting, writing and representing number with quantities. The ten frame will support kinesthetic learners as well as teacher when modeling different ways to make number and introduce addition concepts. Students will use educational websites to review letter recognition, letter formation, early reading skills, word family, sight word, counting, adding and subtracting skills.
Kindergartners require countless of one to one teacher’s assistance and supervision not only for educational support but also for personal assistance, such as, tying their shoes, wiping their nose, addressing their behavior and tantrum, and counseling.
The implementation of I-Pads, reading and math manipulative will facilitate fun learning experience and more time to support my needy students and to collect and analyze data to be used for future meaningful planning.
