My Students
As Marcel Proust says, “There are perhaps no days of our childhood we lived so fully as those we spent with a favorite book.”
Diverse: what other way can one describe a student population any more? You say it must be difficult to teach the English language. I say it's an experience.
Kids need diverse authors. Kids need diverse words. Kids need diverse topics. Kids need diversity. Kids need books. You can help that.
SLMS-- Do you know our numbers?
1,900 total students
197 English language learners in the program (Not including exited students)
37% Hispanic- Spanish and Portuguese
29% Asian- Chinese (Mandarin, Cantonese), Vietnamese, Thai, Korean, Hindi, Arabic, Japanese, Urdu, Turkish
17% White- English, Russian, Greek, French
14% African-American
2% Two or more races
We are one of if not the most diverse English-language population in the Fort Bend ISD.
So, why are we lacking the diverse books needed for these students?
“Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him.” – Maya Angelou
My Project
Students will have full-time access to books of multi-genres that include multiple reading, Lexile, and grade levels. With my personal classroom library, students have the ability to check books in and out of the classroom at their will. Having a classroom library readily available adds the extra incentive to read when an assignment is finished, there is extra class time, or to take a book home because it was eyed on the shelf.
With a world as diverse as ours, our libraries need to be just as diverse.
When a student finds a book they enjoy, the options are limitless going forward.
