Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in an urban district where 100% of the school receives free and reduced price breakfast, lunch and snack. They walk to school on high traffic streets and often rely on the home-school coordinator for coats, backpacks, and school supplies.
The students I directly work with are special education students with speech and language impairments.
My students have Individualized Education Programs developed to provide them with specialized instruction, accommodations and modifications to help them to access grade level curriculum and achieve academic benchmarks in their general education classroom. My students have significant articulation impairments that impact their overall speech intelligibility and subsequently their reading and writing skills.
My Project
This will be our 5th year running our speech camp program in the summer. We need help filling our trunk with supplies to work with over the summer. We fill our days with shared reading, followed by station based activities with the primary focus on improving speech sound production and enhancing pre-literacy skills.
Speech camp has been a successful venture the last 4 years, and we hope to continue its success this year.
More than 25% of students who attend our speech camp have been dismissed from receiving speech and language services. Our increased dismissal rate can only be continued with fun supplies to incorporate into our crafts, activities, and lessons. Being as though we are in a different location every year with a new set of students, supplies go missing, get dried up, broken or run out. We need your help to bring the CAMP atmosphere to our summer program. We need crayons and paint to color and paint pictures with our target sounds.
We need construction paper and tissue paper to make crafts that have rhyming words. We need Pete the Cat and Rainbow Fish to read during our whole group shared reading and listen for target sounds or words. We need headphones because we do listening center activities on the computer, and when you enter a new location every summer you are no guaranteed access to working headphones.
