I teach at a Title I school in southwest Florida. Over half of our school populations receive free or reduced-price lunch. Our students have diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our students come from a wide variety of family dynamics and diverse households.
I believe every student is capable and deserving of learning.
They just need the right tools and someone to guide them.
My Project
I am first year teacher and one of the hardest thing I have encountered is filling my classroom library shelves with books. I love reading and so do my students - we make a big deal about it! I love that my students are thirsty to learn and always ready to read about new things. All of these books I have requested have been chosen with my students in mind-I have watched them the over the weeks read titles just like these and I have also asked them what type of books they would enjoy reading. My goal is to have enough books for students to choose ten books every two weeks to keep with them at all times, which will help them continue to enjoy their independent reading time.
With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own level.
They will also be able to choose books that interest them. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already have shown an amazing interest in independent reading, and this project will only help their experiences with the printed word.
More than half of students from low‑income households
