Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work at a public middle school where 80% of students are students of color and 60% are English language learners. I am a first year teacher and have a very small classroom library to provide my students.
My students have shown a passion for reading, but just need the resources.
Unfortunately, the books available in the library are above my students' reading level, or they have already read in their past classes. By providing more access to books, my students will be more likely interact with one another about their books.
My Project
I am asking for books for both my special day classroom and reading intervention class. My students have all shown interest and requested to several of these books. We have about fifteen new books at their level, but the rest of the books that can be found in our classroom library are old and tattered.
In my classroom, we practice reading through independent, small-group and whole-group reading.
My students really enjoy the process of reading independently. I want to provide them a plethora of options to pick from. I'm requesting a variety of fiction and nonfiction books and book sets including Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts, March, Alexander Hamilton, Snow White, We Will Not Be Silent, and Booked.
My students enjoy connecting with the characters in their books to their own personal life experiences. Besides these books producing a love for reading, they will also help the students practice crucial skills around fluency and comprehension.
