My students need capacity and place value manipulatives, such as practice boards and measurement sets, to help them comprehend this abstract concept.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Teacher, how much is 2 quarts? What's behind the ones place again?" Some concepts are just so abstract that it's hard to imagine. A capacity and place value center is just the manipulatives I need to make these abstract concepts concrete.
My students are highly motivated learners.
We are located in a low income area, but the students are high achievers. We are an exemplary school, with exemplary kids. My students love working with hands-on materials, and they like to help their peers who are struggling to understand a concept. They are natural born leaders; they just need more materials to work with.
My Project
Capacity is a challenging unit for students to learn. The information is so abstract that students find it hard to remember the sizes. By having capacity resources available, I want to introduce my students to capacity by having them use the manipulatives in a learning center. By being a part of the experiment students will be able to retain the capacity information longer. They can also utilize the manipulatives as a visual cue. The place value materials will be used the same way. Each student will be able to manipulate the decimals and review place value at the same time! Students who struggle with understanding decimal place value will be able to utilize the flip charts at their seat and review independently or with a partner!
Your donations will help students learn and utilize capacity and place value by instructing them with a concrete approach.
Studies have shown that students who are able to manipulate and use materials, retain the information longer. When students are merely lectured most information is lost. Let's restore the lost information by having the students actively involved in the classroom.
