My students need these supplies in order to be successful in their classes. We need a wider range of differentiated activities to ensure success and growth for all students at all levels.
Our school is a 6th-8th grade middle school that is composed of a very diverse group of students. They are hard working, struggling learners in the 8th grade that are trying to prepare for high school and the future with many obstacles to overcome. Many of our students are on free and reduced lunch. I have 2 classes of 10-12 students that are 3 or more grade levels below their peers, and 2 classes that are co-taught classes of 25 or more students with 5 to 10 kids being special needs.
My students tend to struggle academically to comprehend, read fluently, and write fluently, as well as struggling with math and at times making good choices behaviorally when frustrated.
They struggle to be organized, and prepared for classes with needed supplies. I am hoping to help them fill in the gaps in their learning while at the same time helping them have all needed supplies so they start their day out on the right foot.
My Project
These mechanical pencils will help my students that struggle financially by giving me the ability to provide them with their basic school needs. Kids need to have the pencils in order to complete the learning activities in their classes. Many come empty handed daily.
The differentiated Versatiles math and literacy workbooks for 3rd through 6th grade will make learning fun and will allow for more individualized instruction in comprehension, fluency, grammar and mechanics, as well as math at the individual level the student is working on for their IEP goals.
This will help to add some fun ways to review previous information, fill in gaps in learning, and push them to continue to try in a way that is way more fun and exciting to them.
Many come to class stressed out or frustrated because the work is too hard. Several of my students struggle to focus for long periods of time when you have ADHD. Being able to give them fidget items like the fidget cubes, fidget chain, magic cube, etc. and teaching them coping skills and how to use the fidget items appropriately will help lessen the frustrations they feel daily. These fidget items help to destress kids when they need something to do with their nervous energy, but they want to be in class and learn. Holding a fidget item helps them maintain focus and engagement in class.
