Our year-round school has a center-based program for the district's Deaf and hard-of-hearing middle school students. Our school also has a self-contained classroom. Together, our teachers in these programs work to provide their special needs students with enriching, creative, and authentic opportunities for learning and growth.
Hands-on, real world activities enable our students to be engaged in their own.
We see real progress when these children can get out of the classroom and experience the world on their level.
Many of our students are from low-income families. These families want the best for their children but just aren't able to provide these types of educational opportunities very often. We would like to make this possible for all of our students.
My Project
The NC Museum of Life and Science offers many hands-on exhibits as well as real world experience that many of our special needs students do not get to experience in their home/school lives. Seeing first hand how wind moves by designing a wing, looking at skeletons of animals, making a tornado form. These are all things that are difficult to explain to deaf/hard-of-hearing students who are very visual.
By filling in the gaps in our students' background knowledge, we can give them a solid foundation on which to build future content area skills.
Many of our students are several years behind in reading and math, mostly due to language delays. When families can't communicate effectively from a young age, those children can quickly fall behind.
Getting our students out of the classroom to have these first person, real world experiences with teachers of the deaf and sign language interpreters enables us to bridge those gaps and helps our students be more successful.
