Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My class is composed of 55 fifth graders in a general education class. Some students have an IEP and others are ELL learners and some are special education students with autism.
A typical day in my classroom looks active.
My students are engaged in learning activities that get them moving, talking to their peers, and asking great questions. You will not see a lot of worksheets in my classroom. My students are learning through hands-on experiences.
I teach in a Title I school.
My fifth-grade students come from very diverse families. I am excited to share that my school is a genuinely diverse community. Not only do students come from varying ethnic backgrounds and places, but the life experiences that they’ve had are incredibly unique. My scholars are creative, thoughtful, and full of excitement!
My students are 9 and 10-year old children that love coming to school. When school was closed in the spring of 2020 due to the pandemic not only were the kids wanting to come back but we missed seeing their smiling faces every day.
My Project
Help me give my students books and book sets to become fluent readers, I have students that are reading at level A up to level Z and having a variety of books will make my students comfortable. I teach 5th grade, but we currently have ELL students that are reading Beginner, Lower intermediate and Intermediate. I teach computer science and this is why I am requesting books such as
Baby University Complete "for Babies" Board Book Set (Baby University Board Book Sets) because students that are reading as Beginners will be able to start reading books at their level with pictures.
In addition to this book set I am requesting many more book levels for emerging readers like Where's Spot? We're Going on a Bear Hunt, classics such as Corduroy and many more. Also to cater to my students that are reading in the upper levels, I am requesting graphic novels that are culturally relevant to the topics we will be learning in the classroom. Culturally responsive teaching (CRT) helps create environments, curricula, and instructional methods that validate and reflect the diversity, identities, and experiences of all students. When we do that, we raise the level of academic rigor for all learners. This is why I am requesting books that will help my students become empowered and engaging to read. Such books include The Astronaut With a Song for the Stars: The Story of Dr. Ellen Ochoa, Numbers in Motion: Sophie Kowalevski, Queen of Mathematics, Human Computer: Mary Jackson, Engineer (Picture Book Biography) and many more.
