We are the second-largest school in a district that directly impacts our military community along with low income and ESE (Exceptional Students Education) communities. We house grades PK- 8 in our buildings, including the second-highest population of special needs children, ESE children, and children who have a father, mother, or both parents in the military. This makes us a population that serves military families and military students. Our school directly impacts the military community it is built around. These demographics make our school a very diverse population.
Our school is also a Title I school which means the majority of our students receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunches.
Some are displaced while others are homeless.
To give these students the opportunities they all deserve, we must provide a quality learning environment. Being Title I, those essentials are few and far between. Our students are bright, they are resilient, and they strive to be the best they know how to be, but they also want to be more than that. It is our responsibility to make those things happen for them, no matter what it takes.
My Project
I have yet to establish a working library for my classroom, but I know that these spectacular titles listed are quality books with various lessons that would be utilized daily. My students absolutely love coming to the carpet and hearing new stories!
Together, we are able to use our imaginations and travel to new places as well as stretch our minds and learn new lessons or morals.
Not only do I want to teach my children about the importance of compassion for others (which many of these stories hit on) but I want them to have fun and engaging stories to go along with our weekly themes each week! Kindergarten/First grade is not only the time to show the love for reading but to expose the kids to the numerous types of reading that is available and the important messages that a book contains. Granting us this wish list will not only help my current children in my room but the children in my room for years to come!
