Fill an Empty School Library with the Gift of Books

Help me give my students these graphic novels. Our school library does not have ANY graphic novels. These books will provide access to an important genre of literature.

My Students

Do you remember getting hooked on a book to the point where you weren't able to put it down? My students haven't been afforded this opportunity. My students are amazing kids who are predominantly struggling learners. My school is a Title 1, high poverty area in which 94% of students receive free or reduced meals. Many students live in public housing, shelters or foster care. My school is a Target Support Integration school and currently the lowest ranked in literacy in my school district. I service students in grades K - 5, including special education, ENL and general education, all of who are motivated readers, always wanting to acquire more information.

It would be wonderful to be able to fill the scarce library shelves with rich literature.

Most students do not have access to books at home and a school library is a perfect resource for the children. The doors to the library opened several weeks ago and is in dire need of books to fill their relatively bare shelves. This space has been vacant for many years and I've been revamping it to create a school library which is considered the hub of literacy.

My Project

These books will spark interest in a school of enthusiastic students. Many students have never been to a library and have never had the good fortune of reading a graphic novel. These high interest books will provide access and exposure to an unfamiliar genre, graphic novels. For example, several of these books contain socio-emotional themes; this is a key concept for a great deal of the school population. The non-fiction texts will provide important information in a student-friendly format, in turn increasing student motivation and retention.

Many of our students don't have any books at home; reading these books will enable children to build stamina, to take books home, and foster higher order thinking skills.

These books will serve to foster academic progress, homework and facilitate growth in literacy, while simultaneously promoting a love of reading!
