Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a Title I school with about 500 students. The majority of our student population is Latino and African-American, many of whom reside in temporary housing facilities in the South Bronx. Our student population is comprised of over 100 students who have special needs and 98% of our students are eligible for free lunch. Despite these odds and challenging circumstances, our students come to school each day and are encouraged to see our school's vision, which is for all of our students to "Be our best, love learning and inspire the world!" With a continued perspective on strong instructional practices and improving students' outcomes, we are focusing on supporting our students' academic, social, and emotional growth and development. This focus is important in that we believe students learn best through regular interactions with adults who know them well in a supportive and safe environment.
My Project
Now that we are faced with COVID 19, returning to school safely will be especially challenging. Having a place to put kids' materials so that they are not sharing items will be really important this year. I have chosen file cabinets and storage bags so that students can have their own individual storage place.
Gone, for now, are the days of common storage and community sharing.
It is essential for all students to have a place to store their school supplies so that we can try to combat the spread of the virus. I think these items will help in that effort.
