My Students
Awww man...another worksheet! Don't you remember the constant drill and practice of math? You hated going to class because you were absolutely sure your teacher was going to give you another dreadful worksheet. Help me create an engaging classroom for my students and keep them wanting more!
I teach at a Title I middle school, in DeKalb County, located in the outskirts of Atlanta, GA.
Each day I am greeted by a lively group of 6th grade students. My students come from many different cultures and walks of life. With a population growing increasingly diverse, I am continually seeking ways to reach all of my students and ensure their success. My students come to me eager to learn but many times are kept from achieving due to a lack of materials, resources and funding available to them.
My Project
Kids are hands-on learners. I am requesting a math file folder library to use as centers in my classroom. File folder games are a way to keep the students actively engaged in the content and at the same time practice basic skills. Implementing the new common core curriculum allows for a more hands-on approach to the curriculum and more critical thinking by the student. The resources that I am requesting will help the students visualize the more abstract ideas that we are focusing on in the classroom. I have also requested additional dice and playing cards in order for the games to be beneficial for a wider range of students. With the additional items, I will be able to make copies of the file folder materials and more students will be able to participate. I will also use those materials for other activities practicing skills with integers and probability. Math is a very vital subject for everyone and these resources will help the students gain a deeper understanding.
Your support of this project will help my students now and for years to come receive hands-on experiences in math class.
You will help eliminate the dreadful WORKSHEET that so many of us became accustomed to throughout our mathematical experiences. By supporting the use of hands on activities in the math class, you are fostering the growth of critical thinkers and more productive citizens.
