Filament to Make Resources and Projects For an Art Classroom

Help me give my students new 3D printed Art History references, Art tools and a special graduation gift for my 8th Graders!

My Students

I teach Art in a PK-8 school. We are a Title I district that offers free lunches to all of its scholars. My scholars love to research new subjects and materials to influence their artwork.

My scholars are obsessed with learning all forms of Art, especially the digital applications.

They have glimpsed the artistic possibilities of technology and they want more opportunities to learn. I am determined to feed this ambition, as the fastest growing Art fields are largely computer-based.

My Project

Thanks to Donors Choose, I have a 3D printer available, but the amount of filament I need to serve all of my students is more than I can afford. My aim is to print historical pieces so my students can have a tactile experience of Art history. I plan to print the sculptures of Michelangelo, Rodin, Degas, terra cotta soldiers from China, kunoi from Japan, Oba heads from Nigeria, the bust of Nefertiti from Egypt, Olmec heads from Central America... The list goes on and on. There are also a multitude of Art related tools that I would like to print for my class, that would cost many times more than a 3D printed version, including: calipers, palettes, golden ratio guides, figure models, etc.

3D printing is the tool that will help my Art room overcome budget cuts and loss of materials due to the pandemic.

I am now required to remove clay from my current curriculum and need new projects based on 3-dimensional form, and 3d printing can do that. This can become a rather extensive project, but I am eager to offer it to my students. I already have some students sending me files for printing, but I worry that I'll run out of filament before everyone that is interested can get a finished print.

For my each of my 8th graders, I would also like to print a small version of our mascot as a graduation gift. This would take at least a roll or two of filament to achieve, but I want to send them away with something special and unique after this difficult year.
