We all wonder how to get our students to want to read, and this novel is one of those solutions! I started reading this book to my kids, and they adore it...so much so, that we've decided to build an entire unit around it and include it in the curriculum. This novel is not only going to teach my students about combatting racism and colorism; it's going to show them how to do it without violence! This masterful story reveals how we can use sports as a platform for racial justice in addition to showing our readers how we can work through the personal pain and suffering that racial/color oppression causes, so that we can be okay with who we are and what we look like, no matter what some spiteful outsiders might think or say.
We'll be using this novel as the centerpiece of a unit that will ask the students to create their own documentary film about the power that sports wields and how it can bring about social change!
(Yes, that's right - my sixth graders are just that special that they will be able to conceive, write, direct, produce, and create their own documentary!) This novel is key to helping my students understand (before they make their own documentary) that sports aren't just for fun, fitness, and entertainment, but are a key piece to helping bring about social change and how to fight oppressive forces effectively in a nonviolent way.
