Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As the sponsor of our National Art Honor Society, I hope to empower young artists through projects, campus beautification, and community service. While students love to see their impact directly on campus, it is so meaningful for them to reach out to our community. Service projects teach our NAHS students compassion and empathy for others outside of their everyday experience.

While most of my students come from low income households, it is still important for them to experience the joy of giving to others who are in need.

As artists, they can use their creativity to serve their community's needs while bringing beauty to others.

The Empty Bowls project is a perfect way to teach students about the cycle of creating, serving, and donating to a worthy cause. We will begin with each student defining "compassion" in their own words. Next, NAHS officers will contact organizers of the San Antonio Food Bank to learn about how hunger affects our community and share their findings with the club members. Then, each member will glaze a ceramic bowl using the Mayco Bowls for A Cause kit. Officers will organize a fundraiser for the Food Bank in which we sell and fill the bowls with a simple meal or dessert. This gathering is a great way to share our project mission and personally thank the donors.

The experience of helping to fulfill the basic needs of our community is a life-long lesson for my students. Focusing on others can give them a different perspective of empathy, gratitude, and self-worth. After completing the project, I will ask them to reflect on their experience and redefine "compassion" to see what they learned compared to their original ideas. By sharing their reflections with future NAHS members, they can continue to inspire compassionate service.
