Fighting Hunger and Creating Warmth With Wearable Crocheted Art

Help me give my students Snacks, yarn, knitting and crocheting tools to help combat hunger and cold uniquely.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend a Title I school in the heart of New York. They are special needs students and English language learners, which makes learning challenging. My students come from a variety of economic backgrounds, with all of them qualifying for free lunch. The school population is very ethnically diverse as well. We serve a rising number of Hispanic and African students. Needless to say, students come to school with their own unique set of struggles and successes.

One thing the students have in common, though, is their love for school and learning.

I hope to create an environment at school and at home that meets their unique needs.

My Project

Wearable Crocheted Art can help students practice different skills such as creating block patterns, development of ideas, and creative thinking. Learning how to make wearable Art from yarn will allow students to practice their critical thinking skills through planning and elaboration of their projects. Additionally, crocheted art activities will help my students develop cognitive, creative and social skills. Students will also create detailed instructions in essay form teaching how to make their wearable art designs. They will also learn how to crochet scarfs, socks, and other items to help keep them warm for the winter. My students often like to practice their skills during their lunch periods, the snacks will give them something to eat while they are focused on their creations. The snacks will also provide food for those students who needs a little extra to chase off hunger pains.

Wearable Crocheted Art and snacks will allows students to cultivate their reading and writing skills by helping them to practice critical thinking.
