We love to read books in 5th grade. I try to expand my students with different styles, types, and authors. A few years ago I read this book at another school during my student teaching. The class was engaged the whole time and loved the story Race to the Sun. I want to bring this book into my classroom and currently in ELA and Social Studies we are learning about Native Americans.
I give my students a voice in the class and suggested the book, Race to the Sun, as our fun book club book that we read after lunch.
Almost 100% of my class raised their hand with the vote of yes they want to read this book. Along with just fun reading this book, we break into smaller groups to read, discuss, comprehend and build our vocabulary. This would be an amazing book to introduce small groups to provide leadership and accountability to stay on task and not fall behind. Our first book, we read as a whole class but this book is the next step into smaller groups.
This book teaches about a strong girl in early middle school learning the value of family, friends, and her culture. She is Navajo and the story waves their mythology and culture into this book beautifully.
What makes my students and school special? We are a Title I school in Idaho. Majority of our students are ELL or on a special lunch program due to income. Also, I have several students that are on IEPs and 504s. I try to reach these accommodations through audio books, hand held books, digital books with highlighted words to help my dyslexia students. Right now we do not even own a single copy of this book in our school library.
