I teach 31 fifth students in a wonderful small multicultural school located in Los Angeles. 32% of the students at our school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and everyone receives free breakfast. Our school is a great caring community with students from kindergarten through sixth grade. This year my students have expressed an interest in designing obstacle courses for their physical education practice. While our school does have a jungle gym with a slide and some bars, we need equipment that can be moved around and reconfigured.
My Project
My fifth grade students want to design and build their own obstacle courses so they can challenge each other with various races. We have requested obstacle course resources that can be set up in hundreds of different ways. Designing different obstacle courses ties into our engineering studies, will be a fantastic outdoor creative activity, and will involve teamwork. My students will need to learn how to compromise when working together, and think about each teammate's strengths and weaknesses as they design their obstacle course and practice various physical activities. Racing through the various obstacle courses will also help my students build endurance so they will be able to pass the California 5th grade fitness test.
