My students and I first met in 4th grade. We enjoyed our time so much that we decided to move on to 5th grade together, which is the last grade for our school. As soon as the move was approved they were overcome with "senior-itis" and began planning all the events and activities that would take place this year, most notably- the senior trip.
My students are all from low income families and all are eligible for free meals with very limited resources for non-essential items.
The expense of a trip, even one for educational purposes isn't one that many can incur.
My children are studious, conscientious good citizens. They take their education very seriously and are well aware that if granted this amazing opportunity, it is not one that they can take lightly.
Man, this trip will change them! Many of my students have never left New York City. A visit to our nation's capital will hopefully impact their lives in ways we will never be able to fully gauge. We will visit the Washington Monument, the Martin Luther King memorial as well as the African American Museum at the Smithsonian and the White House.
My students are excited to be on a bus for three+ hours and "cross state lines".
They are excited at the adventure of it all and the responsibility they know this trip carries with it. They will be "on their own" next year as they go to middle school, and this trip will provide educational lessons they will carry with them long afterwards.
