Fifth Grade Wonder to Promote Empathy and Understanding of Uniqueness
Help me give my students the book "Wonder" to create a classroom of empathy, acceptance, and kindness. I want every student to have the book to hold, read, and develop a safe and trustworthy classroom community.

My Project
The first days of fifth grade are awkward and uncertain. Reading "Wonder" as a class promotes empathy and addresses bullying and acceptance: The book directly confronts the issue of bullying and encourages students to stand up against it, promoting a culture of acceptance and kindness. I want every student to have the book to hold and read as a community.
Auggie's English teacher, Mr. Browne, has a precept for each month of the year for his students (and the reader) to ponder.
September precept: "When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind." Here our classroom kindness theme begins, as choosing kindness is ALWAYS FREE!
"Wonder" teaches valuable life lessons:
Themes including resilience, perseverance, while the power of positive choices provide important life lessons for my classroom environment.
Discussion opportunities:
The complex themes and multiple perspectives in "Wonder" provide rich material for classroom discussions and critical thinking activities.
Positive impact on social behavior:
Studies have shown that reading "Wonder" can positively influence students' behavior, leading to increased acts of kindness and compassion towards others.
September precept, “When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind! “
