My Students
My goal is for all of my students to remember the projects they did in fifth grade, to know that they are loved, and to be ready to enter sixth grade next fall.
When people hear that I teach fifth grade, they often get a strange look on their faces and begin talking about how bad fifth grade is.
While it does come with its challenges, fifth grade is my grade of choice. Because I teach in a Title One School, my class consists of a diverse group of students that bring different backgrounds and life experiences. Many of my students have limited experiences outside of their hometown, and have witnessed poverty on a day to day basis. The diversity in my classroom has taught me a lot in the past few years. While my students are learning from me, I am constantly learning new things from them as well.
My Project
At the end of each school year, our students are engaged in field trips, graduation ceremonies, and a huge project known as a Wax Museum. Each student in fifth grade chooses a famous person with positive contributions to society from the past or present to research. Our students must use both the Internet and the book sources in order to research their person of choice. Our students will then write a speech from that person's perspective and dress in costume to perform (or read their speeches) for parents and other classes in our school. This project is always exciting. We have moved the event to the evening and opened it throughout the entire school. Last year we had a wonderful turnout of parents, which can sometimes be rare in our school.
Our students are tasked with researching a person using both a book source and an Internet source.
We need more books for our students to use in this project. These books will help our students gather more information. Students see the value of using books in addition to internet sources because books can sometimes be more reliable.
