My Students

Our fifth graders enjoy exploring and learning new topics.

Most of our students have not left their neighborhood to experience important places where historic events actually occurred. The students need exposure to these places to make personal connections related to social studies. Our focus this year will culminate with immigration. Our students are from a low-income environment. Many of our students are learning English as a second language. Our student population is now 60% Latino and 38% African American. The vast majority of our fifth graders have not experienced most of educational opportunities available locally. Although the school provides several extracurricular activities, the students need more experiences outside of the school setting.

My Project

In class we will be studying European immigration. This project is for a field trip to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island Immigration Museum so our students will connect their prior learning to the actual locations where different events took place. Our students will learn how America became a melting pot.

This educational field trip will provide hands-on learning experiences to spark questioning and research beyond what is learned in the classroom.

This opportunity will be a lifelong memory for most of our students.
