My Project

Every day, I read at least one story to my students. During our read aloud time. students learn new vocabulary, practice their listening and comprehension skills, and begin to develop oral language and concepts of print. Not only are books uses for teaching these skills, but they can also support creativity. While some books may be engaging to a few in the class, not all of the books engage all of the students all of the time.

With the Piggy and Elephant books as well as Mercy Watson books, children can continue to build foundational skills of good readers as well as learn books can be exciting and pleasurable.

Mo Williams created Piggy and Elephant books which encourage the students to think about what is happening around the characters as there is not background. Also, he uses these books to help teach social and emotional skills to students like how to share, problem, solve, and be a good friend.

Kate DiCamillo wrote the Mercy Watson books. These books are perfect chapter books for students to listen to. Each chapter has a few pages with a lot of pictures. The students can remain engaged in the book but also requires them to use their memory as the book will not be finished in one day. The students will need to remember what happened prior in the book to makes sense of what is going to happen next.
