I have taught third grade in San Lorenzo Unified School District for 36 years. With our California State Standards, we study the Solar System and all that it entails. The children love this Unit because they have an extreme curiosity about the Universe and what we know about it....and what we don't. All of our third graders take a trip to the Chabot Space and Science Center which is located in the hills of Oakland, and is a "state of the art" facility. It has been a great resource for our third graders each year. We have four third grade classes, with 20 students in each room. We spend all day at the Science Center seeing a program called "Dance of the Planets" in which the kids dress up as planets, asteroids, etc., and then revolve around the sun to classical music. The kids revolve to scale as to how far each planet is from the sun. Another part of this trip is a visit to the Planetarium where they see a state of the art presentation about Space, the planets, our Solar System, and beyond....including black holes, and many other exciting concepts. The presentation includes beautiful pictures taken from the Hubble Telescope, which puts it into reality for the kids. Thank you so very much.
