The North Carolina Standard Course of Study for third grade implements investigations of living systems in science. This field trip will integrate the sciences and arts for students to create and investigate projects relating to plants and organisms. While visiting the Cape Fear Botanical Gardens, students will categorize a variety of seeds we use every day and why seeds are important. Students will plant a seed in a recycled newspaper pot to care for at home; recall the parts of a flower and the function of each structure. Students will also create an anatomically correct paper flower to take home. Margaret Willis Elementary is a 98% minority populated school, with 95% free and reduced lunch offered to students. The school is placed in a suburban setting. We are located within walking distance to a city park. However, this park is mostly wooded, with limited access to the study of diverse plant life. Students will need the cost of admission to the Botanical Gardens which is $5.00 each. The cost includes the guided tour and a hands-on project. There will be approximately 60 students, which will bring the cost to $300.00. During our scientific explorations, in the upcoming school year, we would like to give students the opportunity to experience the actual growth habits and diversity of living organisms. This will benefit their inquiry based science skills, while helping them to use their reflective, expository writing skills upon returning from the field trip. Simply looking at plant life in pictures in comparison to experiencing the organic responses of nature is unlike any experience our students will encounter. This trip will also give them a chance to step out into their community to experience other locations of interest, besides their daily visits to school and home. We hope to make this possible with your help.
