Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

Rachel is the spokesperson for our AP environmental class. She has taken most of the science courses offered at our high school and is a rock-star student. She cares deeply about doing well and about helping fellow classmates.

My students heard about a trip I've taken in the past and showed interest in the trip. I said I'd be willing to coordinate it but would need them to raise the funds to make it happen. It is an expensive trip for my students, so we need outside support. I told them about donorschoose.org student-developed projects, and Rachel agreed to take the lead on it.

My class is entirely seniors, and they are all expecting to do some sort of college after high school. This project will help them get more of a science research background while working with their classmates in a fun, engaging situation. They will be developing a research question collaboratively and then testing that question by collecting evidence. Real-life problem solving will happen a lot in the three days of research.

In Their Own Words

Our AP Environmental Science class will be taking a three-day trip to Mount Rainier in order to gain real world knowledge and experience on what it is like apply environmental science outside with real-life field study experience. This trip would give us the chance to apply the knowledge that we have been learning all year in the classroom to a real world experience. This trip will help many students gain a new perspective on what it is like to study the environment and potentially go into the STEM field.

As a student, it is important to be able to lead projects for the community because the leadership will help build necessary skills for later on in a career. I plan on working with my environmental science teacher to help create field studies that will occur while offering ideas on community building events and what would be interesting to study while we are at Mount Rainier.

Burien, the suburb of South Seattle that we live in, is a very diverse area. This trip would bring together students of all backgrounds and give everyone the chance to have an experience in the field of environmental science. Most students will not get this opportunity in high school before they know what they want to study later on. This trip will give many students the opportunity of a real world science experience that could increase diversity in the growing STEM field.
