My Students
I am a special needs teacher working with students in the sixth grade. The majority of my students carry the diagnosis of high-functioning Autism, ADHD, and intellectual deficits, as well as, sensory integration challenges.
My students are hard working and dedicated to their academic success.
However, they struggle to stay on task in order to meet the demands put upon them within the classroom. When working alongside typically developing peers, my students' anxiety levels often increase which impacts their ability to complete work.
My Project
With access to sensory balls, a timer, sensory tubs, Theraputty, pencil grips, triangular pencils, and other fidget materials, my students, especially those with Autism and ADHD, will be able to regulate themselves so that they can successfully access the curriculum presented to them in English, Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics, as well as, Art, Tech. Phys. Ed., and Music.
Fortunately, as adults, many of us are able to blend in with our peers in various situations so that we do not draw unwanted attention to ourselves.
As you can imagine, students with disabilities yearn to "fit in" amongst their peers too. These tools will allow them to do so both socially and academically.
