This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach autistic students in grades K-5. They have sensory issues that, at times, prevent them from functioning in a school setting.

At times, they have sensory overload which is when your five senses—light, sound, taste, touch, and smell—take in more information that your brain can process.

Overwhelmed by all the input, the brain responds as it would to a life-threatening situation and enters fight, flight, or freeze mode.

We provide supports that help them regulate themselves such as fidgets, break areas, noise cancelling headphones, sensory walks, etc. I'd like to provide more sensory items for them to help throughout the day. these items would be made available to them in all classroom settings and out of classroom settings as well. The items I'd like to provide are noise cancelling headphones, stress balls, and other fidgets that allow them to regulate themselves and calm down when they're experiencing sensory overload.
