"I'm doing great today because we have drama class!" Each morning, our students start the day by pausing, owning and naming their feelings, and working through a reflective practice so they are ready to learn. Excitement and positivity towards drama class is a common theme during these morning reflections, but drama class can be over stimulating for some of our diverse learners.
It is my goal for each of my students to share the same excitment about the dramatic arts, and to provide them the tools they need to be successful in their own way.
Drama provides opportunities for students to explore their emotions, move their bodies, practice teamwork and conflict resolution, build empathy, and feel free to be creative risk takers and to make mistakes. In drama class, students support one another as they develop into a strong ensemble, capable of conquering anything they set their mind to. In order to provide my students with a rich variety of experiences and with an environment that is accessible by all, we need your help.
My Project
Learning in the arts can be a little messy, noisy, and very hands on. While many of my students love the exploratory nature of a drama classroom, it can be over-stimulating for some of my diverse learners. I am in search of an array of fidgets to support the needs of these students. Picture one of my students with ADHD, attentively watching a short play with a stretchy string occupying his hands. Imagine one of my students with Autism taking a sensory break with a pin art toy, finding calm in the visual nature of the toy and the feel of the pins. See another student with anxiety channeling her energy into a wobble cushion as she collaborates with peers in writing a short script.
Providing my students with a variety of fidgets and flexible seating options will help support my students with sensory needs to more readily access the drama classroom.
