As a middle school teacher in an urban school environment where more than 70% receive free and reduced lunch, and over 30% qualify for special education services, it is often hard to keep students engaged in the content. Our class serves students with a range of disabilities, including ADHD, autism, and emotional disturbance.
In order to focus on learning our students need to move, dance and fidget.
While we encourage this movement, it can be distracting to their peers and the teachers. At times it could also lead to unsafe situations in our classrooms. Our students love to express themselves, we want to help them be successful!
My Project
The materials I am asking for would be highly prized in the 6th grade classroom. In my experience, I have seen bouncy bands work wonders for students working at desks. Students are able to move their feet while typing, writing or reading. Wobble seats give students an opportunity to move while listening. Moving stools are great for student at any age to use! Students can safely rock back and forth to focus their attention on the teacher, and on their work. Hand fidget tools, when used correctly, give students a confident booster when being challenged by writing or reading.
We would love for students to have a safe way to move and sway freely that would be less of a distraction to those around them.
The movement the materials provide help this population of students feel successful. Having a positive work space leads to academic and behavioral growth!
