Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are the absolute best! They are just coming back from being on homeschool learning so they have not been in the classroom in over a year and a half. So needless to say they are excited but nervous.
These students are resilient, caring, kind, and excited to learn.
They are ages kindergarten through 5th grade. They are in a very low-income area of Salt Lake city which makes them grateful and resilient but also they are forced to go through things that children should not be subjected to. They love their school and they love their teachers. They are more excited than ever to be in the actual school this year and see their friends and caring adults.
My school is a majority-minority school with over 70% of students on free and reduced lunch. The main languages spoken in our school are Spanish and English, so a lot of the students are in the Dual Immersion classes. They look out for one another and treat each other with kindness and compassion. They have high ambitions and want to take over the world!
My Project
Our students today are more anxious and stressed than ever before. I have a few fidgets in my office which I purchased myself but they are getting more and more destroyed every day and I cannot let them take any of them home. Every single student, regardless of age, wants to play with the fidgets and take them home. I know what you are thinking, its just because its a toy. But honestly I have discovered its so much more than a toy. The students want them because they help them focus and they help reduce their anxiety. If they have something they can focus on instead of talking about their problems, or struggling with academics, or focusing on their problems with friends or family, they are so much more calm and happy. They might just be a toy to adults but to the kids they are so much more. I want to give my students an opportunity to have the fidgets not only when they are in my office but in the classroom and at home as well.
