My Students
I teach 5th grade English Language Learners. I love the population I work with. It brings me such joy to see their language acquisition throughout the school year. My students work on 4 key domains of learning, reading, writing, listening, and speaking during their time in the EL program. To help facilitate better learning opportunities and more intentional language acquisition I try to provide an environment where they can have fun learning, take chances, and see themselves progressing with the English language. I love using manipulatives to facilitate a deeper understanding of the language and to help them gain confidence in their general education classrooms. In my classroom, we support each other's achievements and are proud of the smaller milestones when they happen. We have fun while learning and build a sort of family along the way.
My Project
The social and emotional well being of my students is very important to me. I need my students to feel supported and heard in my classroom. All of these resources have been explicitly requested by a student, or I have seen a great need for them.
Classroom environments this year can not be as inviting and warm as they have been in the past.
Students are in class for so many long hours during the day and on my campus, the students are staying in the same room for the whole school day. Last year students traveled between their math, science, and ELA teacher, but this year the teacher is traveling. My students are lucky enough to be able to get out of their homeroom and spend 30 minutes in my classroom, but when they come to me they have a lot of energy they need to get out.
With everything going on in the world and students coming and going as some return to in-person learning and others opt-in to my county's virtual learning program my students need to have their social and emotional needs met and I nor their other teachers can adequately meet those needs when our students have so much nervous energy trapped in their little bodies. With these fidgets and sensory resources, I will be able to give my students a fun and interesting environment to learn in and I hope to make my room as inviting and warm as I can during this season we are in.
