Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach math because I love solving problems with students. Throughout the year, my students develop as mathematical thinkers, problem solvers, and as people. We work on tackling problems in multiple ways, showing solutions in multiple representations, and justifying solutions.
My students span grades ninth through twelfth and ages fourteen to nineteen.
Most come from low-income neighborhoods in Boston. My students want to be successful in school, but they do not always have the skills or the tools to achieve at high levels. I work with students who have learning disabilities, executive functioning issues, and the general restlessness of adolescence. My school focuses on community leadership, asking students to advocate for themselves and take ownership of their learning throughout their content classes.
My Project
My students are crazy smart - emphasis on the crazy. They are amazing mathematical thinkers and problem solvers, but as ninth-graders they have so much energy that they struggle to listen to a lesson or an explanation from a peer. The requested earmuffs will allow them to block out noise and focus on their work - even when peers are being distracting. The fidget toys will help my students harness their energy, occupying their hands and feet so their brains can zoom in on math.
Young teenagers live in the world of 10-second SnapChats, 6-second Vines and fast-moving video games.
Complex thinking is difficult to achieve if one is rarely able to sit down and focus on one task. With these materials, my students will be able to develop their skills of focusing on one task. Over time, they will learn how to advocate for their own accommodations to manage their energy, and eventually block out distractions without wearing earmuffs.
