My students need fidget items, such bands to allow them to bounce their feet without disturbing other students and fidget objects that move quietly and one handed, so that they are successful academically in class.
In our classroom we work as scholars to become the best we can be. We are a low-income, public school in a rural community. Many learners have a less than desirable home environment and yet still come to my classroom with positivity because they know they will be respected and that education is the key to making a better life for themselves. My learners are hard-workers, eager-learners, and highly motivated individuals.
Being a change for good in their community and the world has become this class's motto.
They have set academic and personal goals that are above and beyond the usual thinking for a fifth grader. As a teacher, my philosophy has always been student-centered; providing opportunities for creative thinking/learning and personal growth. My learners are actively engaged in all lessons so that their minds can open up and reach their full potential. In our school district, 5th grade is the last year in elementary school. I feel that this is the most crucial year for a learner to make the gains they need to be successful in middle school. Thank you for reading about my learners and considering donating to us!
My Project
This year our class is learning about the individuality of each learner. We have talked about how each of us need different strategies to stay calm and focused in our classroom. The focus items that this project has will be used for students to try out and learn what tools they need to successfully focus and participate fully in class.
Each learner is an individual but each is valuable to our whole class being successful.
Learning tolerance helps our class come together and support each other. When learners are able to experiment and learn what works best for them to be calm and focused, they can apply these skills to every part of their lives.
Each of these tools serves a different learning style. The bouncy bands allow students to bounce their feet to help them concentrate on the instruction and their work. The fidget items in the sample kits allow students to have different choices of how to "fidget." They fit in the palm of a students hand and they can move their fingers which, for many of my students, helps them attend to what is being asked. As an example one tool is a marble within a plastic sleeve. Students can hold them in the palm of their hand and move the marble back and forth. This allows them to concentrate without becoming distracted. The other items are of varying sizes and have balls or hinges that allow the item to be moved silently in the palm of their hand.
As they try each tool they can better support each other and understand that our uniqueness brings strength to the whole. The items will also help the students focus on the instruction and enable them to do better in their school work.
