This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The calm corner in my classroom has gotten increased use since the pandemic. Students ask to go to the peace corner when they are sad, tired, upset, frustrated, or over-excited. Sometimes I encourage students to go there to prevent behaviors from escalating, or when they're past making that choice for themself. It has become a much-needed and well-used space! But, sometimes students don't need a separate space. They use tools to help stay focused on the rug or at their seats, so that they can do their work. Some individual students have particular sensory needs, but I have come to experience that most young learners benefit from sensory tools at one time or another.

All of my students need a variety of special sensory tools to stay harmoniously engaged in the classroom!

Wobble cushions will help with staying seated at the rug, bouncy bands let kids get their energy out while seated at their desks, while the weighted wrap and the various squishy sensory fidgets offer multiple options for students to self regulate. All of these tools will be provided to support students mental health and physiological needs.
