Fidget for Learning

Help me give my students fidget gadgets that allow them to release excess energy without being a distraction.

My Students

Although our school is located in the center of the Silicon Valley, about 50% of our students are socio-economically disadvantaged, about 25% are English language learners, and about 50% qualify for free and reduced-price lunches. Less than 50% of the parents have had some college or graduated from college.

My students are full of energy, creativity, passion, perseverance, and diversity.

Working with middle school students keeps me up with the latest clothing, music, and video game trends. I am forced to be a lifelong learner when trying to incorporate their interests into my classroom.

My Project

Many middle school students seem to exhibit restless energy. Sometimes, releasing this energy can become a distraction to others and damage school supplies. Too often, I find broken pencils, doodles on the desk, and snapped rulers.

By intentionally providing options for fidgeting, students can find appropriate ways to meet their sensory motor needs.

Strong, durable chair bands allow middle school children who may even be adult size to wiggle their feet. Things like Boinks, Bike Chain Fidgets, and Monkey Rings can provide deliberate, constructive movement for the fingers. If students see that teachers are trying to meet the needs of the whole person, they may be more engaged in learning.
