Fidget & Focus!

Help me give my students a better way to focus during instruction by incorporating yoga balls, wiggle cushions, and fidgets into my classroom.

My Students

All of my amazing students qualify for Special Education and have mild to moderate disabilities. Some students struggle with Specific Learning Disabilities, others have Autism, and some have Other Health Impairments. Even though they struggle learning and retaining what is taught, they never give up! They put in so much effort and keep trying day after day.

My students' resilience and grit motivate me to keep learning and trying to find new ways to help them reach their goals.

These kids show me every day to find joy in the small successes because those small gains can make big changes over time.

My Project

Have you ever found yourself clicking your pen, tapping your leg, or doodling in order to focus during a presentation or in class? We all seek ways to help calm or focus our minds when it is easy to be distracted. The pandemic has increased my students' anxiety and distractibility. It is difficult for many of my students with disabilities to focus during instruction. Learning is hard for them and their minds can easily wander. The pandemic has seemed to amplify students’ off-task behaviors and getting them to pay attention for long periods of time has become harder than ever before.

When kids are able to move around or get out their wiggles, they can refocus on the task at hand.

Since moving around a classroom can be distracting to others, students need a way to "move" without harming the learning of others. Wiggle seats and yoga ball chairs allow students to move, but still remain seated. Many students also benefit from the use of "fidgets." These small objects can be held in their hands to help focus or calm anxiety. Some people might view fidgets as toys, but I find they really help my students with ADHD and anxiety.
