Ever try to read a book that wasn't at your reading level? Or try to understand a difficult new math concept without a hands-on visual? This project seeks to make reading and math more fun and accessible.
My students are 2nd graders in a high-poverty school in Northern California.
Our school is our district's most ethnically and socioeconomically diverse, and my students come from many cultures, linguistic backgrounds, and abilities. Students, parents and teachers are working hard to improve academic performance.
My Project
This project hopes to get much-deserved books into the hands of students who are reading on grade level and above! I have about 75 books from my last school for students that are Below Basic in 2nd Grade Reading, but I have a handful for those on-target students and advanced students that are more prevalent in my new class.
To make reading exciting, I need to expand my classroom library to reach all reading levels and interests in my class. This project will also help teach 2nd grade math concepts through manipulatives and educational games.
Research shows that readers need to read books that are challenging yet not overwhelmingly hard.
The books I've selected are books they can read and love!
Learning to read is a crucial life skill all kids need to attain. In order to do this they need access to books, and lots of them.
Please help improve our literacy and math programs with high-interest, exciting books and hands-on math manipulatives!
