My Project

Two years ago, through your generous donations, I was able to supply my students with a class set of Lehua Parker's "One Truth, No Lie." I would like to add more copies of this novel to my inventory so that I can lend out physical copies of the books to students who might need to review them at home.

I've really enjoyed teaching this book over the past couple of years because, as we read it, students are not only fulfilling the goals of our ELA content standards, but also learning about Native Hawaiian culture and values.

I impress upon students that since we have the privilege of living in Hawaiʻi, we also have a kuleana (responsibility) to learn about Hawaiian history, language, and culture. Parker is a Native Hawaiian author from Hawaiʻi, and her book adapts Hawaiian moʻolelo (stories) to a contemporary setting. Students have gotten to see themselves reflected in this literature and enjoy reading references to our local culture.

I'm looking forward to, once again, having students sketch scenes from the book to demonstrate their knowledge of the literary device imagery. Last time, many of them drew beautiful pictures of a thriving coral reef. I'm also looking forward to both written and multimedia projects in which students will analyze how characters in the book have demonstrated certain values such as those represented by our DOE's Nā Hopena Aʻo framework or found within ʻōlelo noʻeau (Hawaiian proverbs/poetical sayings).

Lastly, I'm including a fan in this project because our classroom temperatures and humidity have been soaring! I would like to be able to get another fan for our class to help cool everyone down so that my students can have a comfortable learning environment.
