My Students

"Be the change you want to see in the world," Mahatma Gandhi said. My students do not yet know who Gandhi is, what he did for the world, or how they can learn from him. Our class doesn't have the books to get into deep literature study that explores a variety of linked books in various genres.

My students come from many different backgrounds and countries.

In my class alone, we have students born in 6 different countries speaking many languages. We are in a multi-age classroom and have students K-8 at our school. Our students come from a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds.

My Project

My students need a class set of a Gandhi biography to learn of his life and a class set of the fiction book No Talking which references Gandhi's life experiences. My students need a class set of a Gandhi Biography so they can learn about an important figure who, like them came from a humble beginning. It is important for my students to learn about important figures from many backgrounds and countries. It is also important for my students to be able to read and understand various kinds of text, such as biographies. Along with the class set of Gandhi biographies, we need a class set of the book, "No Talking" by Andrew Clements. This is a fictional novel about students their age. In the book the characters reference Gandhi's life and go on a talking strike. The students need this background knowledge about Gandhi before they can fully understand and appreciate the novel, "No Talking". By having both sets of books, we will be able to do an in depth, double literature study using various kinds of text about similar topics.

With these books we will be able to appreciate a person who changed the world, and the students will know that they can do the same.

They will see how children their age used Gandhi's actions to influence their own lives. They will also be able to compare and contrast two types of literature to have a deep understanding of the topics at hand.
