My Project
Fernando Valenzuela is a legend in Dodger baseball. Sadly, Fernando passed away last year, but fortunately, local author and educator, Dr. Kathleen Contreras has written an engaging children's book that brings the story of Fernando's life to the next generation. By funding this project, you will provide copies of the text Born to Play Beisbol: The Magical Career of Fernando to students.
This engaging book offer opportunities for our students to see themselves, their families, and their dreams represented.
Born to Play Beisbol: The Magical Career of Fernando Valenzuela also provides students opportunities to grow in their literacy. Dr. Contreras was a school teacher before she became an author and university professor. She wrote this book with a deep understanding of students interests, linguistic development and the Common Core standards. Text organization, figurative language, and word choice are all lessons that can be created using this biography of Fernando Valenzuela. She has also written the text in Spanish, so our multilingual learners have the opportunity to read the text in their primary language. Finally, by funding this project, you also make available the text Rooted in Strength. Our team will use this text to guide our lesson planning for the Fernando Valenzuela unit.
Thank you in advance for donating to this project. You are making a difference in our classrooms and community!
