My amazing, energetic students are some of the most incredible people I know. Despite their cognitive, behavioral, and emotional disabilities, each student contributes unique strengths, talents, and insights to our classroom. Helping my students master challenging content, grow as individuals, and become positive members of society is an honor. Each student has diverse educational and emotional needs that are best met through hands-on learning experiences. Being a Title I school, most of my students come from impoverished homes and face additional challenges such as food insecurity, lack of basic supplies and lack of transportation, and reduced access to resources.
My students' emotional and behavioral disabilities, as well as intellectual disabilities, lead to additional challenges in the classroom that require creative interventions to improve focus and learning, especially during the pandemic that continues to alter their lives and routines in so many ways.
My students enthusiastically pursue any opportunity to enrich their learning through fun, hands-on activities, such as the garden, cooking, and vocational skills, but they sometimes struggle to focus during the activities. My goal is to guide my students as they aspire to reach their maximal personal, academic, and behavioral potential!
My Project
We are a Title One school, for students with a variety of disabilities. Almost all of my students come from impoverished homes, and even though the families try really hard, they are not always able to provide basic necessities.
I want to reduce the stigma and embarrassment our students experience because they are simply not prepared for, are too embarrassed to ask for, or simply have accidents when their menstrual cycle begins by providing our girls with a feminine hygiene kit that they can keep in their bookbag.
Every female has experienced that awful feeling of your monthly cycle coming on when it is not expected. My student's medications often interfere with have a regular cycle that they can track, even though we provide calendars.
