My Students

Everyone dreams of their fantasy home. My students are going to get a chance to create a model of their home with the resources I am requesting in this proposal. They will learn about architects and will create blueprints and balsa wood model homes.

I teach at an all-girl public school in New York.

This is a Title I school; all students receive free/reduced lunch. The main goal of our school is to empower urban girls to make positive life choices. The mission is for all of our students to go to college. My personal mission, as a Visual Arts Educator, is to expand students' understanding of art making. Many of these girls have not had art since they were in elementary school. Also, many have them have not been inside an art gallery/museum. I am working to change that.

My Project

I am requesting balsa wood and hot glue sticks to make model homes. My students will draw blueprints of a home and create a small 3-dimensional model of the home. They will learn about American architects that created innovated designs such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Frank Gehry. We will examine the famous house built by Wright and Fallingwater. Students will draw inspiration from traditional and/or modern architecture to design a small scale home out of balsa wood. The results in the past have been so impressive that staff and students remember designs students have complete from years ago.

Architecture has been a "man's" job, and I want girls to see that it is a great career choice for women as well as men.

It requires strong math skills to be an architect. I am teaching them that creativity and math is possible!
