This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Question: Where oppression exists, is revolution inevitable? The StudentsLive and BASE partnership will challenge students to respond to this question through the lens of music. Nigerian history and music, as Fela says, can be a nonviolent "weapon" to expose corruption and the abuse of power.
We are Bronx designers of solutions to complex global issues.
We are seekers of justice and liberation through understanding systems of injustice and oppression. We are critical thinkers and historians. We are young music lovers. We are visionaries!
My Project
Students will work with a teaching artist, potentially a world-renowned Afrobeat musician and Fela scholar, to learn about the Afrobeat tradition and Fela's music to understand how music can be a tool for educating the masses on political change. The workshops will culminate with a presentation of student songs and lyrics.
This project will not only engage students in a musical tradition that may be new to them, but it will also engage students in understanding the history of post-colonial Africa in a sonic and kinesthetic way.
Ideally, students will remember information because the workshops will help students connect complex concepts like decolonization to their lives by surrounding them with interesting political figures who made changes in their nations.
