Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach third grade students in a large urban district. My class is very culturally diverse. Many come from homes where only Spanish is spoken, some come from very low income areas, some are from single-parent homes. They have limited life experiences and need hands-on activities to bridge the learning gap.
My goal is to give them the opportunity to experience science and math using as many, varied manipulatives as possible. I want them to not just read about measuring and memorize metric charts, but to actually measure things using balance scales and the metric system. I want them to not just read about simple machines, but to also build machines and systems, take them apart and see how they work. I want them to not just memorize the water cycle, I want them to examine water droplets under a microscope and magnifying glasses, and see microbes for themselves.
I hope that experiencing math and science personally in hands-on activities will help them make the connection between the abstract and the concrete. I am hoping that some of them will aspire to become the scientists and mathematicians of the future.
