Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The school that I work at is a Title I school; working as a counselor with students that have experienced significant loss (family members) due to Covid can be and continues to be very challenging. Due to the impact Covid has had on them it is super challenging, and it’s a process to help them to learn how to self-regulate. The resources ( Calming Strips, Identify Feelings Tactile Emotion Stones) will aid in teaching students how to self-regulate their emotions. For example, a student activity that I could use these resources with would be with our 3rd and 4th grade group; whereby we identify a feeling and describe ways to deal with the feeling in a healthy way (that won't harm themselves or others). The Tactile Emotions Stones will be used by students that are clearly dealing with a crisis as a way to calm themselves so that they can better articulate to me (counselor) what exactly could be causing the crisis( emotions/behaviors). The books that I plans to use are culturally based and teach all students to celebrate and embrace diversity rather than tolerance; for example, Fry Bread Native American and Pride The Story of Harvey Milk. The packs of Uno cards will teach students how to play with their peers and what it feels like to win the game (and how to manage the feelings of winning) as well as losing the game (and how to manage the feelings of loosing). The Bubble Pop Toys will be used by students when they meet with me individually (as a way to have something tactile in their hands) when they explain their concerns. When students meet/learn social-emotional needs their academic outcomes will reflect that. Thank you!
