Help me give my students tools to self regulate, feel safe and calm down. Weighted blankets, squishy animals to squeeze and fidget toys will all help my students keep their minds occupied, active and focused.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
When we left school on Friday March, 13th none of us knew it would be for the rest of the school year. We didn't get to say goodbye to each other, give an extra hug or send home materials to help students deal with the weeks of quarantine and eLearning.
My school is a high poverty school.
Many of our students don't have what they need at home. School was a safe place, and that has been taken away. My students are scared, worried, unsure and they miss their friends and teachers. Many of my students are home alone all day. This makes their worry and fear even greater.
My Project
My students have been away from our classroom for a month and a half. With the use of school laptops I am able to provide online learning activities and opportunities for them. What I am unable to do is hug them, make them feel safe and provide daily praise and attention.
Many of my students spend the majority of their days home alone.
They are scared, unsure, nervous, angry, sad and full of anxiety. Weighted blankets and toys can help alleviate some of that. These tools can help to neutralize an overly excited or withdrawn child. Pressure on the body can increase the release of serotonin in the brain. This neurotransmitter is sometimes called the “happy” chemical because it creates a sense of calm and well-being. Their gentle pull on the muscles and pressure through the skin send just the right input to the nervous system to help it organize.
My students can't learn if they don't feel safe, are unfocused or anxious. I need to help them calm their bodies and minds.
